France knocked off Portugal yesterday in the quarterfinals, although it was a very tough and tense match throughout.
In fact, the two sides battled to a scoreless draw through the regulation time, and then through the extra time, as well.
That took it to penalty kicks. Both sides were fighting evenly, until Portugal's João Félix missed his penalty shot. France was able to take advantage and close out the match to eliminate Portugal, and move on to the semifinal round.
There, they will meet Spain, who earlier that day managed to best the hosts of the tournament, Germany.
It was a very tough games, with very few chances opening up for either side. As if to underscore that fact, neither team managed to break through with a goal in a scoreless first half.
Then, Dani Olmo broke through to score the game's first goal in the 51st minute.
In such a tough, defensive battle, it looked like Spain might run out the clock on hosts Germany, until Florian Wirtz netted the tying goal in the 89th minute.
On to extra time this one went. The game remained even, and neither team was able to get a goal, until very late into the extra time. It was at that time that Spain's Mikel Merino managed to score a stunning goal with just 65 seconds of extra time remaining. The Germans were clearly shocked and dispirited, and unable to get the equalizer with such little time remaining.
As a result, Spain and France advance to the semifinal, with the winner moving on to the Euro Final.
