NFL Week 13 Thursday Night Football Preview: Seahawks Visit 'Boys in Dallas

🏈🏈🏈🏈

Seattle Seahawks (6-5) at Dallas Cowboys (8-3)

A big meeting of NFC playoff contenders, this one is.

Later tonight, we shall see if the Cowboys can knock off a team with a winning record, which is not something that they have managed to do yet this season. This has been a major source of criticism for Dallas, and so I think that they will be even more motivated than usual to win this one.

Yes, the Seahawks have a winning record, but barely. They are, in fact, 6-5, and have dropped two straight games, and three of their last four overall. Two of those games were blowout losses to the Ravens and 49ers. The other was a close loss to the Rams, who themselves are not exactly enjoying a dominant season.

Also, the Seahawks are weak on the road. To this point in the season, they are 2-3 on the road. Meanwhile, the Cowboys are 5-0 at home. Keep in mind, also, that the Cowboys really need this win to keep within striking distance of the division leading Philadelphia Eagles. So the Cowboys have every motivation to win this game.

None of that bodes well for Seattle.

It is possible, of course, that the Cowboys will suffer a letdown. However, it feels that all signs point to a Cowboys win, and possibly a very decisive one, at that.

My pick: Dallas

Book & Movie Review: Misery by Stephen King

So I reread this book, which had become one of my favorites back when I first read it maybe....oh, 20 or more years ago. Long enough ago that I can't even remember when I specifically read it. Either the late 1990's or early 2000's, in any case.

It is one of the most popular books by King, because it is one of his best works. I had quite enjoyed it during the first reading, all of those years ago. Yet in rereading it this time around, it seemed even better than I remembered.

Now, this book first saw release back in 1987. The movie came out in 1990. Hell, I first read this book back in 2002, if memory serves correct. So I hardly think that there is much of a real need to warn people about spoilers.

Still, it seems important in this day and age to provide a warning. So here goes: if you have not yet read this book or seen the movie - and there are actually significant differences between the two - and you want to either read the book or see the movie without it being spoiled for you, then you likely want to stop reading here.

*** Spoilers Ahead!!! ****

Okay, last chance. From here on out, there will be spoilers.

Now if you are still reading, then I have to assume by this point that, for whatever the reason, spoilers do noy bother you. If they do and you are still reading this, then you can't say that you were not warned, after all.

So Misery is one of the most famous and even iconic of King's work. The whole idea of a writer (and it applies to any possible celebrity, or as King suggests, "quasi-celebrity" type. It might not be likely, but it is not impossible. Already, there are some relatively horrific stories of obsessed fans who clearly went overboard in their actions and adulation of celebrities. Two of the first news stories that I can remember - the shooting of John Lennon (who was killed) and the shooting of President Reagan (who survived) - both involved men who were attracted to the obviously high public profile of their targets.

In this story, both the book and the movie have a famous author named Paul Sheldon driving during at an ill-advised time during a dangerous snowstorm deep in the rural Rockies of Colorado. Both have him going off the edge of the road and downhill, where the car spins out of control, and where he sustains very serious injuries, particularly to his legs.

Obviously given such horrible weather conditions during a bad snowstorm in the rural Rockies, Paul probably should have died. But someone spots him, a local named Annie Wilkes. We later find out that she is a nurse, but there is a reason that she is no longer a nurse. She saves Paul, and ten brings him to her home. Once she discovers that he is in fact her favorite author, she is so amazed that she decides to keep him right there in her home, instead of bringing him to a hospital for more proper care.

As Paul comes around, he grows only too familiar with pain. One of the things which I particularly enjoyed and remembered from my first reading of this book was how Paul, via the writing of Stephen King, kept relating the pain to pilings which he remembered from childhood trips to the beach. Those pilings would be buried for a while beneath the high tide, but when the tide went back out again, those pilings were always right there, much like his pain kept coming back once the high tide of the painkiller medication began to wear off. With his injuries, Paul finds himself completely dependent on Annie for everything. And this becomes a serious problem once he realizes that she is, in fact, mentally unstable and extremely dangerous.

Annie is obsessed with the characters of Paul's very popular novel series, particularly the title character, Misery, from which this novel gets it's name. There are parts of these novels interspersed on occasions with what is going on between Paul and Annie. When Annie finds out that Paul has killed Misery in the last book, which comes out while Paul is still locked in the bedroom where Annie keeps him, he begins to understand just how dangerously insane Annie is. She makes him burn his latest novel (and there is no second copy), which is not at all about Misery, and which she finds extremely distasteful. Then, she forces him to begin writing another Misery novel, and to bring Misery back to life.

It turns out that she is capable of more horrors than Paul initially realizes. In his attempts to exert some sort of control over his own life once again, he begins to break out of the bedroom that Annie has locked him in. He smuggles some Novril, the painkiller that Annie has him on - and which he realizes he has become addicted to - so that he can access it if and when Annie denies it to him as some form of punishment. But he also finds a sort of scrapbook, where he learns that, in fact, Annie Wilkes is a psychotic serial killer. She has managed to get away with it, at least enough to not get locked away, even though it has cost her the nursing career. Obviously, this is no comfort for Paul, who begins to plan for some kind of escape.

Ultimately, she unearths his plans after discovering that he has been out of his bedroom. Her response in the book is very different than in the movie. In the book, she takes an axe and cuts off his foot. It is a very graphic scene, as Paul looks at Annie picking the foot up before she disposes it as just some sort of trash. The toes are still wiggling a little bit before they stop. Later, he also loses one of his thumbs. By contrast, in the movie, Annie takes a sledgehammer to damage Paul's legs even more. They are both gruesome outcomes, but to my mind's eye, the book is more graphic and disturbing.

In both the novel and the movie, Annie kills a police officer. In the novel, it is a young officer who is taken by surprise, not really expecting much from his visit to Annie's house. But when Paul shatters the window and yells out, he is momentarily stunned to find that the very man he is looking for is right in front of him and apparently locked away. But Annie sneaks behind him and kills him, although not on her first attempt. Again, the details are very gruesome. In the movie, however, the police officer is from the local town of Sidewinder, and he is an old man. Annie sneaks up behind him while he is distracted by Paul's screams for help in the movie as well, although this time, Paul is in the basement. Annie kills the officer instantly by shooting him in the back.

Of course, a final confrontation between Paul and Annie is inevitable. Annie is very strong, seemingly possessed of seeming superhuman strength. It takes all of Paul's strength to finally kill Annie, and that only barely. In the book, she actually escapes the same bedroom that Paul was locked in, although the police later find her dead. Still, a part of Paul will forever be haunted by Annie. In his mind, she has become almost like a demon who can never die, and will continue to haunt him.

This is not a story with many cheap jump scares. It is more about the psychologic battle between Annie and Paul. The entire story is pretty much told from his viewpoint, and we see him first close to death, then slowly recovering, only to sustain serious injuries again when she chops off his foot, and then his thumb. After that, he has become a defeated, docile man. Yet the instinct to survive is still there, and is ultimately what leads to the final confrontation.

As mentioned earlier, there are a number of significant differences between the novel and the movie. Still, they both are suspenseful and rely on the psychological battle between the two characters, as well as Paul's own inner demons. It should be noted that King wrote this while battling his own addiction problems, and this bleeds through the novel, which is one of the reasons why I prefer the book. Don't get me wrong: the movie is good and entertaining. However, King really brings the true horrors of the situation to life in the book, much better than any movie can. As mentioned, small details like the pilings or the wiggling toes stayed in my mind throughout the years, as well as his likening Annie's use of CPR to keep Paul alive as almost tantamount to rape. The unpleasantness of the experience is really brought home in King's description of how he can taste the traces of the food that Annie recently ate while she is breathing into his mouth to prevent him from dying. It is a rather disgusting little detail, but it helps to make this novel feel real. You really get the sense of desperation on Paul's part, finding himself locked away with a true psycho in a dark house filled with shadows, both literally and figuratively, in the middle of one of the most isolated regions of the country, and during the long and foreboding winter season.

Not for the queasy or faint of heart. Yet, I am still recommending this book. King does some very interesting things here as a writer, which I, as an aspiring writer, appreciate.

Album Review: "Hackney Diamonds" by the Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones are back! For the first time in the better part of two decades, the Stones have released a new album, "Hackney Diamonds," of original material. It seemed that each time I heard people talking about it, they remarked on just how vintage Stones the songs on this album felt. And after hearing the album, I think it is easy to understand what they mean. This has a distinctively "Stones" sound to it. Mick Jagger's voice sounds like his younger self from many years ago. If I was unaware, and had been told that this was a compilation of lost Stones songs from, say, the 1970's, I would actually believe them after giving this one a listen. Not sure that you could say the same thing about some of their other, more or less recent albums, such as Voodoo Lounge or Bridges to Babylon Don't get me wrong, I liked both of those albums. It's just that this one feels like...well, vintage Rolling Stones. As if this was a recently discovered pile of lost Stones songs from decades ag.

One of the things that I most appreciated about the album is that the first three songs were co-written with Charlie Watts, which makes me feel that at least this is a bit more of the older Stones, and not just Jagger and Richards doing it alone.

By now, almost everyone who listens to or follows class rock stations must have heard the first song on this album, which also was the first song released as a single, as well. That would be "Angry." It has a solid energy and strength to it and, again, Jagger sounds like the younger version of himself in it. A solid way to open up this new album.

The second track, "Get Close," is also a bit of a rocking song. They worked with Elton John on this one. A solid song, and followed by the much slower paced :Depending on You," a song of heartbreak, as the title might suggest. This is the final one, I believe, featuring the late Charlie Watts, who happened to be my personal favorite member of the band.

After that, the energy goes up tremendously again with the fourth track, "Bite My Head Off." This one features a collaboration with Paul McCartney. It is probably the hardest rocking song on the album, very fast paced and energetic. One of the songs that likely might grab the listener the most.

"Whole Wide World" keeps up the fast pace, although it also has a more reflective feel to it, with lyrics addressing the difficulties of our modern lives. At some point, the song really slows down, and Jagger begins singing about the "dreary streets of London...they never promised much," as he paints a bleak picture of being forced to live with a dead end job as a life sentence. Wild guess, but I suspect that he's not singing these lyrics from personal experience.

After so many fast songs, "Dreamy Skies" slows the tempo quite a bit. This one has a distinctively bluesy feel to it. Following the bleak lyrics from the previous song, it feels like this song was deliberately chosen to follow it. The lyrics here are from a man who is in desperate need to "take a break from it al." A very decent song.

"Mess It Up" gets the album back to a high tempo, with lyrics listing all the ways that the individual being addressed has wronged the singer. Whoever he is singing this to has done a lot of wrongs, from breaking codes to stealing numbers and even seducing his landlord and broke into his home. Sounds like it could be a country music song, but this one is rocking.

The next track, "Live By the Sword," also features Elton John. It has lyrics warning people that if they live by the sword, you're going to die by the sword (and many versions on that running theme) before the chorus switches tact, and assures the listener that he is going to treat you right. Easy to imagine Jagger dancing in his highly energetic way during a live rendition of this song.

"Driving Me Too Hard" has the most distinctively "Stones" sound (to my ears) of any song on this entire album. Right from the get go, it feels reminiscent of music that this band did decades ago. A solid track, obviously.

"Tell Me Straight" sounds different from all of the rest of the songs, not least of all because it is the only one where Jagger is not the lead singer. This one is done by Keith Richards. It is a slower paced track, where he is talking to a potential lover, just urging her to give it to him straight, as the title suggests, before he plunges into his desire for a long-term relationship, lest he suffer a heartbreak.

"Sweet Sounds of Heaven" has an almost gospel feel to it. It features not one but two famous musicians, Stevie Wonder and Lady Gaga. This is the longest track on the album, and if memory serves correctly, it was the second song to be released publicly from this album. Lady Gaga's voice sounds pretty unbelievable in this one, almost reminiscent of Merry Clayton from her duet with Jagger on "Gimme Shelter." This song ha a very different feel than that one, and I am not comparing it to "Gimme Shelter," which I personally feel ranks among the greatest rock songs ever. Still, this is a solid and enjoyable track.

The final track on the album, the aptly named "Rolling Stones Blues." It is a cover of an original Muddy Waters song from the 1950's, and it has that kind of a sound and feel to it. Really bluesy, with a very old feel to it. Solid way to end the album, all in all.

Okay, so there you have it. My review of the the new Rolling Stones album, "Hackney Diamonds." Fans of the Stones are sure to really like this one, as again, it feels almost like a return to their vintage stuff, the sounds distinctively "the Stones." Lady Gaga may draw some younger fans, and there will obviously be some interest due to the other very high profile musicians who collaborated with the Stones on this album (McCartney, John, and Wonder). I derived considerable pleasure with each listen. In fact, the more I listened to it, the better this album got.

Highly recommended!!

The Beatles’ “Final” Music Video By Peter Jackson Garners Predictably Mixed Reactions

Okay, so I believe that I have posted more blog entries over the new and final Beatles song, "Now and Then," than any previous song ever. So I will try to make this truly the last blog entry.

Sorry. It's just not every year, or every decade, that we actually get a chance to listen to a truly "new" Beatles release.

Obviously, anytime "the Beatles" release something new, it will make a lot of news, as the fact that they are chart toppers after not just so many years, but decades, have passed, should attest. So in that regard, "Now and Then" is historical.

Yet, some people are less than thrilled. In fact, some critics are not fans of the song and/or the video itself. Below, it seemed like a decent idea to provide some links to both kinds of stories, showing just how historic this last release by the Fab Four is, as well as some detracting voices who try to tell us just why this last video is not worthy of "the Beatles." One critical voice from Slate (see link below) actually refers to the music video as an "abomination" in the title of the article itself.

Clearly, not everyone is so pleased. Take a look at the links below to see the wide variety of reactions (and detractions) of the new song.

Enjoy!

Peter Jackson Claims That More Beatles Music ‘Is Conceivable’

This felt a bit strange to me. At the very moment when everyone - including the two surviving members of the Beatles - are stating that "Now and Then" is truly the "final" Beatles song ever, there is one high profile person who figures large in recent Beatles history who is claiming otherwise.

Indeed, Peter Jackson - who released "Get Back" just a year and change ago, and who was instrumental in allowing "Now and Then" to be released, has suggested that it "is conceivable" that there may be some more previously unheard Beatles songs still to be released.

Now, I'm not sure about that, personally. Again, "Now and Then" is special because it truly is the final song that all four members of the "Fab Four" knowingly worked on. There are only so many songs that could possibly qualify, and obviously none that come after December of 1980, when John Lennon was assassinated. I, for one, am not a fan of the idea or possibility of having AI provide us some new creations based on what the Beatles might have sounded like, or to alter already existing pieces of different pieces of music into a new whole that was never intended to be a song, to create a sort of Frankenstein creature of Beatles music.

So I, for one, am accepting that this is, indeed, truly the "final" song that the Beatles, as such, ever release. Still, it seemed worth posting a blog entry about how Peter Jackson still feels otherwise, and that we may indeed get some "new" Beatles songs yet.

What do you guys think? Anyone out there have a strong opinion, one way or the other? Please feel free to share your thoughts here.

NFL 2023-24 Week 12 Review

🏈🏈🏈🏈

Indianapolis 27, Tampa Bay 20 - This felt like a meeting between two teams heading in the opposite direction. The Bucs have made the playoffs in each of the last three seasons, and with a weak division, their fast start this season raised hopes for success. Meanwhile, the Colts had a disastrous season last year, and nobody expected much from them this season, either. But the Bucs have not won much since that fast start, while the Colts earned their third straight win and appear to be in the thick of the AFC playoff picture at the moment with this win. My pick: Accurate

NY Giants 10, New England 7 - The G-Men won again. A serious question, though, is whether or not this is even such a great thing. After all, they are not a very good football team. And beating up on some really weak teams - and shockingly, the Patriots qualify as such - is possibly hurting their shot at a higher draft pick, and some serious help, perhaps especially at the QB position. This was an ugly win on a cold and miserable, wet day, so it was fitting in that regard. Still, a win is a win, and the Giants managed another one. My pick: Accurate

Jacksonville 24, Houston 21 - The Texans definitely had their chances. They seemed to be in position to possibly win this game, although Jax had played well throughout, and looked determined to win this very important divisional showdown. They hung on for an important road win, and now enjoy a comfortable two game lead over both the Texans and the Colts in the AFC South. As for the Texans, they are a team on the rise, but this felt like one of those inevitable setbacks. My pick: Accurate

Pittsburgh 16, Cincinnati 10 - Predictably, the Steelers earned a win against the weakened and much diminished Bengals. Cincy could not find much offense against the tough defense of the Steelers, and they just could not get anything going at the end, with the game on the line. They are in last place in the division, and their fortunes are sinking fast. My pick: Accurate

Tennessee 17, Carolina 10 - Hardly an electrifying win for the Titans. Yet at this point, with a season which has not gone at all the way that they had hoped, they will take what they can get. The Panthers fought and played tough, but they still own the league's worst record at the moment. My pick: Accurate

Atlanta 24, New Orleans 15 - This was more or less what most people would have expected from this one. Neither particularly high-scoring nor low-scoring. Nothing spectacular or even especially memorable. But a solid game at home for the Falcons leads to a win over the Saints. And a very important one, at that, as now the two teams are tied atop the NFC South with identical 5-6 records. These two teams will meet again in the final week of regular season, and it just might be for the division title. Meanwhile, what a solid win for the Falcons. My pick: Accurate

Denver 29, Cleveland 12 - Don't look now, but the Broncos suddenly are hot. They have looked very good in recent weeks, after a disastrous start to the season, which included that historic trashing at Miami, when the Broncos defense allowed ten touchdowns and close to a record 70 points. While they still are on the outside looking in, beating serious playoff contenders like the Bills and the Browns and the Chiefs really is showing that this team is not one that anybody should want to play right now. A dangerous team! My pick: Accurate

LA Rams 37, Arizona 14 - I had assumed - wrongly - that the Cardinals would be fired up to earn a win against the Rams in this one. Instead, they were dominated. Not sure if the Rams can actually qualify for the postseason or not. But this was nevertheless an impressive and important divisional road win for them, and obviously helps their chances. My pick: Inaccurate

Kansas City 31, Las Vegas 17 - The highlights from this game showed the Chiefs offense looking almost like poetry on the football field. Few teams have looked so graceful on offense that I can remember. This team may not have the highest scoring offense or the most intimidating defense. Yet, they are more or less the complete package, and wins like this show that they may just yet still be the team to beat. My pick: Accurate

Philadelphia 37, Buffalo 34 (OT) - For the first time that I can remember this season, the Bills actually looked like a good team in a losing effort. They played hard and pushed the Eagles all the way to the end of this game. Ultimately, the Eagles survive this scare and still maintain the league's best overall record at 10-1. Still, Buffalo played well, and showed what they are capable of, and how good and dangerous they can be. The problem is that they dropped too many games so far this season, and their playoff chances really are at risk now, so they have very little wiggle room. My pick: Accurate

Baltimore 20, LA Chargers 10 - It felt like the Ravens survived this one, because the Chargers seemed to be rallying towards the end. Yet in the end, Baltimore got the job done, and the Chargers did not. It was indicative of how the season has been going so far for both teams. A solid win for the Ravens, who own the AFC's best overall record at 9-3. The Chargers, meanwhile, lost their third straight and fell to 4-7 on the year. They are teetering dangerously close to being out of the playoff race. If they keep playing the way they have in recent weeks, it's just a matter of time. My pick: Accurate

Chicago 12, Minnesota 10 - This result took me by surprise. The Bears defense really showed up and came to play, forcing four Minnesota turnovers, and holding the Vikings to just three points total until well into the fourth quarter. In fact, when they finally scored, it appeared that Minnesota had saved themselves from a costly loss. The one and only touchdown drive also happened to be when the Vikings defense was suddenly forcing Chicago turnovers - particularly by forcing fumbles from Justin Fields. Still, Da Bears defense held, giving their offense one last chance late in the game, needing a field goal. To his credit, getting past those two fumbles, Fields had two crucial completions to D.J. Moore, one for 16 yards and the other for 36 yards. That helped set up a field goal attempt by placekicker Cairo Santos of 30-yards, which he absolutely nailed for the win, allowing Chicago to earn a rare, much-needed divisional win. Minnesota's defense did not even play that badly, not allowing the Bears to score even a single touchdown. Again, though, the Bears D really put on a clinic in this one. This one hurt the Vikings playoff chances, which looked strong when they went on an impressive winning streak that reached five games. Now, however, they have lost two straight games as they enter their bye week, and they are in desperate need of collecting themselves and refocusing in order to make that final push to the postseason. My pick: Inaccurate

Some More Old Pics Found Over the Weekend

Here are some old pictures that I found over the weekend. Not sure if I have published any of these in the past. If so, apologies.

They just seemed worth sharing here and now.

Inside Story of The Beatles Final Song “Now and Then”

The Professor of Rock is a great Youtube channel, if you're into old (and frankly, not so old) rock 'n roll music.

Yes, yes, the genre seems to have largely faded from public view, and astonishingly quickly, at that. However, it is not dead. And despite the stupid stereotype that appears to have prevailed, about fans of rock  - particularly "old" or classic rock music - being for rednecks, it simply is not true. Bottom line is that it was less than a generation ago when rock music still felt prevalent on most radio waves, across most of the Western world.

However, rock has lost some of it's power and influence in recent decades. That goes without saying. It needs a jolt, perhaps something similar to what Nirvana managed to do in the early nineties, particularly when their track "Smells Like Teen Spirit" suddenly took over the world. Maybe it will happen, but maybe not. Time will tell.

Meanwhile, however, the "old" rock really does appear to be fading away. Some musical acts who once were longstanding kings not just of rock, but of popular music in general - bands like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Janis Joplin, the Doors, the Kinks, the Grateful Dead, and the Creedence Clearwater Revival, to name just a few - have been gone for decades now. Other longstanding acts, like the Rolling Stones and the Who, are still around, but largely consist of only a couple of original members left.

The times they are a changin'...

Still, we classic rock fans received a couple of blessings this year. It all seemed to happen just in the past month and change, in fact. The Rolling Stones released an album of new material for the first time in over a decade and a half. And the Beatles have released new material also...well, sort of. They released one last song, "Here and Now." Peter Jackson has suggested that there may still be "new" Beatles material still to be released, although that seems unlikely with two of the original four members gone, and the other two in their eighties. Indeed, both Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have suggested that this will truly be the final Beatles song ever released. When you consider that this indeed is the last song that all four members of the Beatles worked on knowingly to work on and produce something as it is, and not some hodgepodge of material that may be combined to form some new "Beatles song," or some kind of AI filling in for the void of actual involvement by the members of the Fab Four, than it is difficult not to admit that "Now and Then" is indeed the "final" song ever released by the Beatles.

Yet it came out in 2023, all of these decades after the Beatles themselves broke up. Even more than a quarter of a century since the last time that the Beatles released new material when "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love" were released as part of the Anthology albums released in the mid-nineties.

So I, for one, am counting my blessings in this regard. It will be the last year that both the Beatles and the Stones will have released new material. Let's appreciate the moment for what it is.

Below is an informative video that tells the inside story on the making of "Now and Then."

Sunday Funny: A British Revocation of American Independence

Let me just say, before anybody gets all up in arms, that the following is a joke! It is not meant to be taken seriously. These days, people too often are ready to take everything at face value.

No, I am not advocating that Britain go ahead and revoke American independence. And if there is one advantage that Americans have over the British, it is the absence of a Royal Family, frankly.

That said, it sure appears that we have become almost the basket case among nations of the developed world. Most people outside of the United States are baffled by us Americans, particularly the political beliefs that allow someone like Donald Trump to be such a powerhouse within this country.

To the citizens of the United States of America from Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II: In light of your immediate failure to financially manage yourselves and also in recent years your tendency to elect incompetent Presidents of the USA and therefore not able to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately. (You should look up ‘revocation’ in the Oxford English Dictionary.)

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except Kansas, which she does not fancy).

Your new Prime Minister, David Cameron, will appoint a Governor for America without the need for further elections.

Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated sometime next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

1. The letter ‘U’ will be reinstated in words such as ‘colour,’ ‘favour,’ ‘labour’ and ‘neighbour.’ Likewise, you will learn to spell ‘doughnut’ without skipping half the letters, and the suffix ‘-ize’ will be replaced by the suffix ‘-ise.’Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (look up ‘vocabulary’).

2. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as ”like’ and ‘you know’ is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as U.S. English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take into account the reinstated letter ‘u' and the elimination of ‘-ize.’

3. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.

4. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you’re not quite ready to be independent. Guns should only be used for shooting grouse. If you can’t sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist, then you’re not ready to shoot grouse.

5. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. Although a permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

6. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left side with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

7. The former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline) of roughly $10/US gallon. Get used to it.) 8.You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.

9. The cold, tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. New Zealand beer is also acceptable, as New Zealand is pound for pound the greatest sporting nation on earth and it can only be due to the beer. They are also part of the British Commonwealth – see what it did for them. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat’s Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.

10. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie Macdowell attempt English dialogue in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one's ears removed with a cheese grater.

11. You will cease playing American football. There are only two kinds of proper football; one you call soccer, and rugby (dominated by the New Zealanders). Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies).

12. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the Australians (World dominators) first to take the sting out of their deliveries.

13. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.

14. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).

15. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 p.m. with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with cream) when in season.

God Save the Queen.

Far Right-Wing Extremists Enjoy Stunning Successes in Recent Dutch Election

It has been a busy week here, so I am getting around to this story only now, a couple of days after these election results managed to stun most of the rest of Europe.

Netherlands had an election on Wednesday, the 23rd - two days ago as I write this. The results of that election sent jolts throughout Europe and, indeed, the entire world. It also seems to serve as confirmation of a political trend that appears to have spread around the world. Namely, the rise of far-right wing extremism.

Geert Wilders, the leader of the far-right PVV, managed to stun all of Europe with a huge victory in these Dutch election.

Wilders has been a controversial figure for some time. Generally regarded as a populist, and leaning towards being anti-Islamic. Yesterday's election victory by Wilders and his PVV generally shocked all of Europe, and even the world.

It is just more confirmation of the overall trend. Similar far-right extremist political gains in polls and elections across Europe having already taken place in traditional major western democracies, including Great Britain, France, and Germany, as well as numerous other countries. They have outright won prominent representation already in governments in Italy, Austria and Hungary. Giorgia Meloni is presently the far-right Premier of Italy. And Hungary presently has the most far-right extremist government in all of Europe, with leader Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz (Hungarian Civic Alliance) having been in power there already for years. Austria has had far-right extremists represented in high government positions in the past, and there are indicators and projections that they might enjoy similar political wins for next year's elections.

And that just covers Europe. Similar extremism has clearly gained traction in the United States, with the political rise of King Con Don and his Cult 45 MAGA followers. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has also brought increasingly authoritarian rule to Turkey. In the Philippines, former president Rodrigo Duterte once seemed to compare himself to Hitler, and then stated that he would "be happy" to exterminate three million drug users and pushers in his country. That's not a misprint, or a slander, but Duterte's own words. Here, specifically, is what he said, according to a Reuters news report from 2016 (see link below):

Duterte told reporters that he had been "portrayed to be a cousin of Hitler" by critics.

Noting that Hitler had murdered millions of Jews, Duterte said, "There are 3 million drug addicts (in the Philippines). I'd be happy to slaughter them.

"If Germany had Hitler, the Philippines would have ...," he said, pausing and pointing to himself.

"You know my victims. I would like (them) to be all criminals to finish the problem of my country and save the next generation from perdition."

Duterte's successor is Ferdinand Marcos Jr., son of former leader Ferdinand Marcos, the former dictator who ruled his country under martial law for nine years. Infamously, his wife owned thousands of pairs of shoes and over a dozen mink coats, as well as other extravagances. All of this while millions in the Philippines lived in dire poverty, hunger, and hopelessness. Marcos opposed any serious investigation of Duterte, particularly the abuses from his war on drugs,, and has used disinformation in order to promote a very different image of his father's rule than actually existed.

Indeed, the rise of far-right wing extremism and increasing totalitarianism appears to be on the rise in so many places around the world, that it feels truly like a worldwide phenomenon. Luckily, it is not happening everywhere. Still, it is clearly happening in enough places, and seemingly all at once, that it should serve as a warning for us all.

The latest news from the Netherlands, and the election successes of Geert Wilders, reminds us that this unfortunate political trend of growing influence and gains for far-right extremism and authoritarianism is far from over.

In fact, it appears to be just the latest sign that this is growing far more serious.

Greece Manages a Tie to End France's Hopes for Perfect Record in Euro 2024 Qualifying

France had been enjoying a perfect record for Euro 2024 qualifying, until a tie against Greece earlier this week ended that.

Greece managed to tie France, 2-2.

Not really a big deal for France, as they had already qualified everything that they could possibly have qualified for already during their impressive run in te prior seven games.

Below are the stats for the game, as well as a link to the BBC article which I got these from. Take a look by clicking below:

Jets Hail Mary Hopes Instead Go Other Way For 99-yard Pick Six For Dolphins, Symbolic of Game & Even Entire Jets Season

🏈🏈🏈🏈

I remember hearing an old joke about the Jets name standing for "Just End The Season."

Once again, we're getting very close to being  at the point where that saying is relevant.

Once again, the Jets will not qualify for the playoffs.

No, that's not official. But they are 4-7, and they just have all sorts of problems right now. I mean seriously: think about how badly the Giants season has been going. Now consider that the Jets at 4-7 are just one game better than the 3-8 Giants.

What a year for the two New York football franchises.

Technically, it's not impossible that the Jets could qualify for the postseason. Again, they have not officially been eliminated. And in theory, if they were to win out their remaining games, they just might qualify for the postseason, although even that would not be a certainty. But considering that they were already on the outside of the postseason picture and looking in just a few weeks following a loss to the Chargers, and then they lost in blowout fashion to the Raiders. Having lost that ground, they went up to Buffalo in an important divisional showdown last weekend, and proceeded to get blown out even more convincingly by the Bills.

And then yesterday, the Dolphins came to MetLife Stadium, and basically dominated Gang Green from the first. True, the Jets got an interception late in the first half that seemed to get them back into the game, and gave the home crowd life. They pulled to 10-6 (they missed the extra point).

Then low and behold, they have a chance to go for a Hail Mary right at the end of the first half. Only it gets intercepted, and then - get this! - the guy on Miami runs it 99 yards, all the way back for a Miami touchdown! Instead a miracle and a prayer touchdown possibility for the Jets to take the lead for halftime, it was the Dolphins who managed to get an electrifying touchdown that made the score 17-6, and once again saw them comfortably in command as the two teams went to the locker rooms.

The second half was not any prettier for the Jets, as the Fins cruised to a convincing 34-13 win on the road against the Jets. Gang Green have now dropped four straight, and are teetering on the edge of even being considered a playoff contender. Again, it would take a real miracle for them to qualify, and they likely would have to win all but one, or maybe two at most, of their games in order to even have a real shot.

Frankly, they just don't look good enough to think that is a serious possibility right now. Their offense looks just awful. How bad is it? The Jets have scored 37 points in their last four games combined. Miami scored 34 points just in yesterday's game alone.

Also, while the defense seems like the one saving grace for the team, it is hardly an elite defense, let alone the "historical level" defense that cornerback D.J. Reed predicted before the season began. After all, the Chargers put up 27 points against them a few weeks ago. Buffalo scored 32 points last weekend, and the Dolphins just scored 34 points. Not all of those points yesterday were on offense, admittedly, but still. This is the reason why talking about how great you are before even taking the field for the first game isn't a great idea. That seems especially true if you happen to be the New York Jets franchise.

I mean, how often have we seen the Jets billed up as a promising  team, with talk even of a possible championship? I remember the "Sack Exchange" of the early 1980's, and at least that team did frequently qualify for the postseason. They even made it to the AFC Championship in 1982. In 1985, they were 9-3 and had the second best record after the 12-0 Chicago Bears. But Gang Green ended at 11-5, and lost the Wildcard at home against New England. The next season, the Jets raced off to a 10-1 start, and everyone was thinking Super Bowl. Then the Jets lost their final five regular season games. They did beat the Chiefs in the Wildcard, but then blew a big lead to Cleveland and got knocked out in that divisional game. Bruce Coslet seemed to bring a much needed bit of fresh air to the team, and they made the playoffs in 1991. But within a few years, he was gone after the Jets kept losing. Bill Parcells seemed to give the Jets the best chance at winning, especially when they went 12-4 and went to the AFC title game in 1998, even taking a 10-0 lead on the road in Denver, before losing to the Broncos. The Jets had some decent teams in the early 2000's, but they also kept falling short. And then the team made consecutive AFC Championship Games in 2009 and 2010, but lost on both occasions.

They have not qualified for the postseason since. It is the longest active playoff drought in the NFL at the moment.

That drought seems sure to be extended for at least one more season now.

Americans Consistently Reveal Their Worst Sides on Black Friday

Today is the day after Thanksgiving, also known popularly as "Black Friday." This day is known by some as a day when you can get great deals in stores that apparently only come on this day. In pursuit of obtaining great items at the cheapest prices possible, there are always headlines of overcrowded stores, where fights break out and/or where there are literal stampedes, and all sorts of other insane headlines that betray the greed of so many in our society. I find it disturbing, and frankly disingenuous, that the day after a holiday in which we are supposed to be mindful to be grateful for all of life's blessings has become known for the worst, pettiest aspects of our too often mindless consumerism.

When I was younger, it seemed enticing. I remember feeling amazed that you could go to the stores at the wee hours of the morning, and find some great deals. I never actually did go on such overnight or early morning shopping escapades, but shopping on Black Friday was not abnormal for me, admittedly. But as the years went on, and the headlines grew more serious and more horrific, it was hard not to see that there was something terribly wrong with this "holiday."

Now, I stay away from stores and shopping as much as humanly possible on this day. Not sure how many "Black Fridays" that I have managed not to go shopping or spend money at all on this day, but this particular "Black Friday" was another day where I was able to avoid going to the stores, or even spending any money. It has become almost a point of pride for me to avoid going shopping on this particular day, of all days.

Some years ago, I posted a blog entry about all of this. It seemed worth sharing again here today. The specifics of the headlines may be different at the end of this day, but my guess is that they likely will be very similar to other headlines from "Black Friday" for past years. This is one set of circumstances that seems to bring out the worst, particularly among many Americans, every single year. So without further ado, here is what I wrote about this day some five years ago now already, on November 23, 2018:

It is no secret that there are many paradoxes in the United States right now.

However, one of the most glaring paradoxes happens to fall on this day each year. Because just one day after sitting down and having dinner with family, with the design being to focus on all that we have to be thankful for, tens of thousands of Americans (conservative estimate) will wake up super early, or perhaps even camp out, in order to go to stores and malls to get what are supposed to be the best deals out there for all sorts of things, although the main focus usually is on electronics, and perhaps toys.

What we see on our television sets are images of stores that are jam-packed with people, waiting on long lines to get into stores to pick up the great deals. Often, we see people losing control, racing and even elbowing some people out of their way to get to these consumer goods at allegedly slashed down prices. What we read about in the headlines is even more horrifying, with people inevitably being injured from fights and from being trampled on by these mobs.

And again, the most depressing aspect of all of this is that this "holiday" comes one day, literally, after the one holiday where we are all supposed to take some time to think about what we are thankful for. It hardly seems possible that these people who are lining up, camping out, and too often losing their minds to acquire cheap consumer goods, like the latest iPhone, are actually genuinely thankful for all they have been blessed with in life. After all, if that really were the case, why go out on a frigid night and leave the comforts of home in order to stand on line for hours, in the dark, in order to obtain still more stuff?

Now, when I was growing up, Black Friday was not nearly so big of a deal, and it did not usually make the kind of news headlines that it tends to do now. It was a day when most people had off, and the stores offered what were supposedly the best deals of the entire year. So, it was a bit like Memorial Day sales or Labor Day sales, except that it fell about one month before Christmas, and was supposed to be the day when you could get the most extreme savings. Black Friday also marked the beginning of extended holiday hours for stores, and many stores continue this tradition, opening earlier than normal, and closing later.

But then, at some point, one of the big stores had the idea to open earlier than anyone else. Perhaps it was 6am, or something like that (I cannot specifically remember), and that made waves. Then, other stores started doing the same, and pushed the opening time even earlier. Before long, it was 3am. Then, it was midnight.

Now, it seems that many of these stores begin opening on Thanksgiving evening, which had formerly been one of the most sacred days on the calendar, if you will. In some cases, certain stores force their employees to work on Thanksgiving, and there was a bit of an outcry over this, for a while, although it never generated the kind of controversy that expressing "Happy Holidays" seems to have done.

Let us be clear: Thanksgiving itself has a troubled history. After all, the experience of Native Americans is, slowly but surely, becoming more familiar to Americans, and so the fact that they do not celebrate Thanksgiving, that for them, it is a reminder of a genocide that they were forced to suffer through, and that this holiday essentially honors that genocide for them, should tip everyone off that Thanksgiving is not simply this innocent holiday where we finally take a moment to truly be grateful for all that we have been blessed with in life.

But if there was any ambiguity left, if many felt that people truly were sincere about their gratitude for all of life's blessings, the recent trend of Black Friday madness and greed and excess certainly should cast all doubts aside. If Thanksgiving is supposed to be a holiday that aspires to the best that Americans have to offer, than Black Friday is a "holiday" that, instead, illustrates the worst that Americans can reveal about themselves.

City of Montréal Comes Out in Strong Numbers For Parade to Celebrate the Alouettes Winning the Grey Cup

One last blog entry about the CFL and the Grey Cup.

Obviously by now, we all know that the Alouettes' de Montréal won the Grey Cup in an exciting game that was decided in the final seconds. Thus, they completed a Cinderella season, in a year when they remained largely overlooked from the start.

It was a big victory, and the city of Montréal came out to celebrate their team's championship - the first in 13 years - when the team returned home for a parade celebrating their championship.

Below is a short video clip on Youtube of the parade celebrations. Take a look:

Alouettes' Marc-Antoine Dequoy Stirred Up Age Old Controversy in Canada After Montréal's Grey Cup Victory

Much like race here in the United States, controversy and trouble are never hard to stir up in Canada whenever someone mentions language, and seems to take a side on the traditional English-French divide in the country.

As it turns out, one member of the Grey Cup champion Alouettes is the latest prominent individual to generate new controversy from this very old debate in Canada. Cornerback Marc-Antoine Dequoy, himself a native of Montréal, Québec, and a French-speaker, generated considerable controversy when he seemed to diss the English language after remarks made while still on the field shortly after his team had won the Grey Cup.

He was asked to clarify those comments a couple of days later, and he seemed to have softened his tone, at least. Still, what he was doing seemed to be pointing out the hypocrisy of the CFL and the stations that broadcast their games, since it seems (according to Dequoy, in any case) to cater to the majority English-speaking group in Canada.

Interesting side story that comes at a time when you would think that the players would simply want to celebrate a tremendous victory.

Below are the links to this particular story. Take a look:

NFL 2023 - 24 Thanksgiving Day Games Review

🏈🏈🏈🏈

No, I did not get around to making my predictions for the Thanksgiving games this year. Not sure why, it just kind of slipped my mind.

In any case, here is the review of the games that took place yesterday:

Green Bay 29, Detroit 22 - Now this one felt surprising. I did not do get around to dong predictions, but will admit that I surely would have gone with Detroit for this one. Goes to show how you never know what will happen with any given game, right? But the Packers dominated in the first half, taking a commanding 20-6 lead in the first quarter, and then adding a field goal in the second quarter. The Lions looked stunned, but they regained some composure and rallied a bit in the second half. Still, they fell short in the end, as the Cheeseheads hang on for the important road win that keeps their slim playoff hopes alive, at least for now.

Dallas 45, Washington 10 - Yikes! Washington lost that bad game to the Giants, but this one got really ugly late. Once again, the Cowboys beat up on a bad team, kind of running up the score quite a bit towards the end of the game there. Dak Prescott looked fantastic, like an elite quarterback. And Dallas seemed to do everything right, beating Washington in almost every way. The defense was solid and opportunistic, and the offense looked explosive and balanced. If they play this way in every game from here on out, they will indeed be formidable. As for the Commanders, this one would be best forgotten, or at least put behind them. But they should remember the lessons they need to learn from such a beating.

San Francisco 31, Seattle 13 - The 49ers jumped out early in this game, building a very solid 24-3 lead. The hometown Seahawks quite often seem to struggle against these 49ers in recent years. It sure seemed like this one would be no different. To some extent, the Seahawks fought in the second half and seemed to make somewhat of a game of it, but San Fran did just enough of what they had to do, at the most critical junctures, to secure an important win and stay hot. It also puts them now fully two games ahead of the second-place 'Hawks in the NFC West race, which may not be insurmountable, but almost feels like it at this point.

A Little More About Thanksgiving

First Fun Thanksgiving, after J.L.G. Ferris

First of all, I am trying to steer clear of National Geographic, ever since Rupert Murdoch took it over and made it a soundboard for his neocon ideology.

Also, I do not want to be the guy who brings everybody down by continually mentioning that the true history of Thanksgiving is a lot less innocent and noble than has been traditionally, popularly believed.

That said, I am adding this one link that brings out another aspect of Thanksgiving history, although doing so with this little aside: I will be celebrating Thanksgiving with not one, but two Thanksgiving meals with friends and family today. However, I will be celebrating by trying to emphasize all of the blessings that I have been truly blessed with. Also, we cannot change history, but we can try to understand it more accurately, and come to terms with it. I am not advocating scrapping Thanksgiving altogether, but the crimes committed in the past, which this holiday essentially honors, should be addressed plainly and truthfully. So, I am doing my part (or as much as I can right now) to spread the word. It seems particularly relevant right now, when the United States is under the microscope for all of the racial tensions that are rising to the surface at this moment in history.
