The Beatles are making all sorts of history....again. The main difference this time is that it comes almost 60 years since the first time that they made history and headlines around the world by capturing the imagination of fans back in the early 1960's, a decade which, culturally and especially musically speaking, the Beatles actually helped to shape.
Well now it is 2023, and the two surviving Beatles have released the "Official Music Video" for "Now and Then," which many are at least claiming is the last true release where all members of the Fab Four contributed specifically to the music.
Indeed, they are back in the Top Ten of the Billboard charts after making history again with the release of what most - including the two surviving Beatles - seem to be referring to as the band's final ever song, "Now And Then." Also, they are tormenting their musical rivals, the Rolling Stones once again, the one band still in existence that can almost rival the Beatles in terms of longevity in making history, although in fairness, the Stones stayed together throughout the years and decades. That would set them apart from the Fab Four, who of course officially broke up back in 1970 - well over half a century ago - and never did get back together again.
Last Friday, the Beatles returned to the top of the British music charts, with "Now And Then", "making history as the act with the longest gap between its first and last No. 1 single," according to an article some days ago by Reuters. A little bit more from that article:
The group's 18th UK No. 1 hit, it brings The Beatles back to the top of the Official Singles Chart 60 years after the group's first No. 1 single "From Me to You". The feat also extends The Beatles' record as the British act with the most UK No. 1 singles in Official Charts history.
It is also the fastest-selling vinyl single of the century so far in Britain with more than 19,400 copies sold on vinyl, and the most-streamed Beatles track in one week, with 5.03 million streams, it added.
The group is also the act with the longest gap between No. 1 singles - 54 years - and the oldest band to score a UK No. 1 single, the Official Charts Company said. McCartney is 81 while Starr is 83.
Obviously, this kind of history is going to garner some significant reaction. Not least of all from the former members of the Fab Four themselves. You might think that Paul McCartney in particular would almost be used to this kind of thing, having become a musical legend and icon in his many decades of staggering success at the very top of the music industry, both with the Beatles, as well as his work since the break-up. Yet, he also sounds overwhelmed by the level of this success:
"It’s mind boggling. It’s blown my socks off," McCartney said in a statement. "It’s also a very emotional moment for me. I love it!"
This reaction has extended to the music industry itself, as well:
"Beatlemania has returned this week," Official Charts Company Chief Executive Officer Martin Talbot said.
“The return of John, Paul, George and Ringo with the last ever Beatles single... has cemented their legend by breaking a catalogue of records - and in doing so underlined the extraordinary scope of their enduring appeal, across all the generations."
Once again, it seemed like the music video itself would be worth sharing, as well as some of the links that are all over the web regarding the Beatles making some real history once again.
Enjoy!
