The Alouettes de Montréal have done it! They managed to upend three straight teams in an unlikely postseason run, and capture the 110th Grey Cup. In their last two games, the quick and opportunistic defence managed to swamp down the two best teams in the league.
Indeed, Montréal took care of Hamilton a couple of weeks ago in their one and only home game. Then, they dominated the Argonauts in Toronto, with their defence scoring two touchdowns, which likely was the difference in the game.
Yesterday, the Alouettes took care of business in their first Grey Cup appearance since 2010. That was a long drought, but the Alouettes managed to make the most of it, coming back from a 10-point deficit to defeat the favored Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Tim Horton Field in Hamilton, Ontario. It is the eighth overall Grey Cup championship in franchise history.
Montréal quarterback Cody Fajardo was named the MVP of the game. He completed 21 of 26 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception. Indeed, the offence was erratic, starting off slow and making mistakes at times during the game, but pulling through when they needed to the most, particularly as the game wore on. Fajardo was particularly impressive in the final minutes, with Montréal trailing 24-21. That was when he led his team on a seven-play, 83-yard drive that culminated with a 19-yard touchdown pass to receiver Tyson Philpot with just seconds left in the game. Just before that, Fajardo connected with Cole Spieker for a spectacular 31-yard gain on third-and-five.
After the game, Philpot said that the team knew that it was going to come down to one key play:
“We talked about it all year, it was going to come down to one play,” Philpot, named the game’s outstanding Canadian, said during a televised post-game interview from Hamilton. “I found one-on-one coverage. Cody trusted in me and the rest is history.”
Fajardo also had some things to say after the game:
“It’s like a movie,” Fajardo said in a televised interview from Hamilton. “It’s very emotional for me. The guys on that sideline were the ones who believed in me. When we took the field at the end, I grew up as a little kid wanting the ball in my hand with the game on the line. I’m just thankful for that opportunity.
“Everybody counted us out,” he added. “This team was so close together. I’ve never been closer to a team. We knew we had something special. Last week, we knew, beating a very tough Argos team, we had a chance. I’m so proud. It seems just like a dream. It’s truly incredible.”
An amazing comeback win, emblematic of the entire season for the Alouettes!
