Much like race here in the United States, controversy and trouble are never hard to stir up in Canada whenever someone mentions language, and seems to take a side on the traditional English-French divide in the country.
As it turns out, one member of the Grey Cup champion Alouettes is the latest prominent individual to generate new controversy from this very old debate in Canada. Cornerback Marc-Antoine Dequoy, himself a native of Montréal, Québec, and a French-speaker, generated considerable controversy when he seemed to diss the English language after remarks made while still on the field shortly after his team had won the Grey Cup.
He was asked to clarify those comments a couple of days later, and he seemed to have softened his tone, at least. Still, what he was doing seemed to be pointing out the hypocrisy of the CFL and the stations that broadcast their games, since it seems (according to Dequoy, in any case) to cater to the majority English-speaking group in Canada.
Interesting side story that comes at a time when you would think that the players would simply want to celebrate a tremendous victory.
