World Series Champions: Texas Rangers
The Texas Rangers simply were not going to be denied this World Series title, it seems.
They finished the regular season with a 90-72 record. Not bad, but hardly dominant. The Astros, their cross-state rivals and defending World Series Champions, had won the AL West ahead of them. So the Rangers would have to go the long way through the playoffs.
And that's exactly what they did.
Texas blasted past the Tampa Bay Rays in the Wildcard round, winning both games. They made similarly short work of the Baltimore Orioles, the team with the best record in the American League, finishing 101-61. The Rangers swept past them in three games, and only Game 1 was even close.
In the American League Championship Series, the Rangers fittingly had to get past the other Texas team, the Houston Astros. The Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 series lead, winning both of those games on the road, only to see the Astros battle back and take the next two games in Dallas to even the series at 2-2. Houston took Game 5 as well, pushing the Rangers to the brink of elimination. It sure seemed like the Astros were on their way back to the World Series.
However, the Rangers came back to dominate Game 6, 9-2, forcing a decisive Game 7. Once there, the Rangers shocked the Astros by dominating them, 11-4, to qualify for the World Series for only the third time in franchise history.
Still, Texas had never won the World Series. Yet, it felt like their time. Sure enough, they won Game 1, only to get blasted by the National League Champion Arizona Diamondbacks, 9-1, in Game 2.
After that point, though, the series belonged to Texas.
The Rangers came back to win Game 3, 3-1, taking the first game in Arizona, and giving themselves home field advantage again in the series. As it turns out, they didn't need it, because the series never returned back to Texas. The Rangers won Game 4, 11-7, to take a commanding 3-1 series lead.
Then yesterday, in their first opportunity to actually clinch the first World Series title in franchise history, the Texas Rangers blanked the Diamondbacks to win the game, 5-0.
So the Texas Rangers win the World Series over the Arizona Diamondbacks, 4 games to 1, earning the first ever World Series Championship in franchise history.
Congratulations to the Texas Rangers, the 2023 World Series Champions!
