Sometimes, we need to understand that while Trumpism took many Americans by surprise, there were some people who were warning about this many, many years, even decades, before it happened.
I had a sneaking suspicion that someone like Trump (but probably more like the fictional Greg Stillson of the Stephen King universe) would indeed come to power.
But there are some people who warned us not only of the fascist strains which would become far more visible in the not too distant future, but named some of the characteristics, to boot. People like musicians Frank Zappa and Jello Biafra, and comedian George Carlin. Zappa and Biafra warned about the Christian fascist theology which was then only beginning to try to take over. Jello Biafra and Carlin warned about how ridiculous and even comical it might all seem.
Below is a video of Carlin warning about how people who might not outright be taken seriously might gain enough power in this country where we tragically have to take them seriously.
Yes, Carlin was a comedian. But I seriously doubt that he was joking about these dire warnings for the future of the United States. He was telling us, basically, that stupidity in the United States had grown so rampant that this was what awaited us.
Look around at our current reality.
Was he wrong?
We should have paid more attention to the artists when they warn us of such things. No, it has indeed come to pass.
