It has now been five years since one of the worst political crimes ever seen in American history.
And that's saying something!
Indeed, it was on this day in 2021, MAGA extremists gathered for a rally in Washington were directed by outgoing American President Donald Trump to interrupt the process of the certification of the 2020 elections. "be strong" and go to Capitol Hill and "take back the country."
The extremists followed his instructions and went to the Capitol. Then, the gathering soon grew violent, as they scaled walls and broke windows and gained access into the Capitol Building in what came to be regarded as an insurrection, an attempt by President Trump to stay in power at the expense of American democracy. At the time of this writing, Trump has still not been held accountable for his role on that day, and he largely pardoned the actions of those gathered on that day.
Of course, Trump claimed - baselessly - that the election was stolen. He was trying to stay in power, despite the election results, which he lost convincingly. Remember, he lost all of the battleground states, and lost the popular vote by over seven million. After the election, Trump was not denied any requests for recounts, and there were over 60 court cases for him and his legal team to make their case. They claimed before television cameras to have "irrefutable proof" that the election was rigged and stolen from him, yet they bent over backwards to not argue that under oath in court, where there are actual consequences for lying and deceiving.
Apparently, none of that was enough to make the neanderthals gathered in Washington and dragging their knuckles on the Capitol grounds on that day paused to stop and think about any of that. No, they just took what Trump fed to them at face value.
Some of them were held accountable and di prison time. Some faced other consequences.
Yet Trump kept referring to them as heroes, claiming that was a "beautiful" and peaceful day.
Just a reminder: people died on that day.
Trump has never been held accountable to this day. At the very least, that should have disqualified him automatically from ever holding major public office again.
Instead, here we are again. The man and his mindless cult following could not have been clearer on that day regarding just how much they disdain democracy. Yet, we Americans collectively put that man right back into the highest office in the land.
Once again, American democracy is in peril.
Yet again, Trump is ruling with lawlessness, even on the international level. Just look at what just happened in Venezuela.
Trump needs to be removed from office. Frankly, his rightful place is in prison.
Throw away the keys, so that our fragile democracy can be restored.
Until we collectively grow smarter, at the very least, we need to remember what happened on January 6th, and remember, specifically, that it was nothing short of an attack on our clearly fragile American democracy. We cannot forget that almost all major lawmakers - even prominent Republicans - condemned the attacks of that day. That includes many Republicans who since, predictably, have typically cozied up to Trump and MAGA, since they are the dominant political force of the moment.
Since, many have tried to whitewash the events of that day. make it seem harmless, or even like a beautiful and patriotic event, as Trump tries to portray it as.
It was nothing of the sort. What we need to remember is that it was a bunch of violent, lawless morons who tried, at the behest of Donald Trump, to interfere with American democracy and keep a tyrant in place.
Lest we forget.
