Just days ago, former special counsel Jack Smith testified under oath, defending his decision to pursue an indictment against the then former president, and now once again sitting president, Donald Trump.
According to Smith (the following excerpts were taken from a variety of sources (see links below, including articles by The New York Times and The Hill, and the Facebook page of David Abbruzzese):
“Our investigation developed proof beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump engaged in a criminal scheme to overturn the results of the 2020 election and to prevent the lawful transfer of power.”
“Our investigation also developed powerful evidence that showed that President Trump willfully retained highly classified documents after he left office in January of 2021, storing them at his social club, including in a ballroom and a bathroom. He then repeatedly tried to obstruct justice to conceal his continued retention of those documents.”
Smith debunked the right-wing conspiracies about his investigation, swearing under oath that President Biden never gave him any instructions about the investigation and never even spoke to Biden about the investigation. Most importantly of all, Smith demolished the fake narrative that Trump and his cronies have been pushing about what REALLY happened on January 6th…and pointed the finger squarely at Trump.
"January 6th was an attack on the structure of our democracy in which over 140 heroic law enforcement officers were assaulted. Over 160 individuals later pled guilty to assaulting police that day. Exploiting that violence, President Trump and his associates tried to call Members of Congress in furtherance of their criminal scheme, urging them to further delay certification of the 2020 election. I did not choose those Members, President Trump did"
"Pres. Trump was by a large measure the most culpable and most responsible person in this conspiracy. These crimes were committed for his benefit. The attack that happened at the Capitol, part of this case, does not happen without him."
It is so strange that the people, like Smith, keep having to defend their decisions, under oath, to legally pursue action against Donald Trump. Yet Trump himself continually and relentlessly hides. He relentlessly pleads the fifth under certain circumstances, and then refuses to release the Epstein Files and, once he finally is forced to by court order, he releases only part of those files, and those which are released are heavily redacted and censored. Kind of strange that he would feel such a need to go to such extraordinary lengths when he himself claims that he is perfectly innocent, and the Epstein Files are nothing more than a "Democratic hoax."
How ridiculous that this man continually is allowed to get away with outright criminal behavior, and that his mindless MAGA cult following, which bends over backwards to create often frankly absurd and false conspiracy theories surrounding Trump's political enemies (talk about "fake news"!), generally never, ever stop for a moment to even lightly scrutinize their own leader, despite the mountains of evidence that this man is more than "a little flawed" or "not perfect," which is the most that I have heard Trump supporters criticize Dear Leader. His own well-documented behavior clearly implies disgusting behavior. Yet, they will never bend in their determination to appoint him as the face and voice and official head of what they claim is the good, Christian nation.
This man clearly has abused his power from well before he ever pursued the presidency. Quite clearly, there is something with his past regarding Jeffrey Epstein which Trump himself is not comfortable reaching the public. Remember, not only is he in numerous photographs and video clips partying with Epstein, but he publicly praised Epstein in a major publication back in 2002, claiming that Epstein was a great guy and "joking" that Epstein loved women perhaps more than Trump himself, although he tended to prefer them on the younger side.
Hello?
Does that sound like an innocent man?
Then his ridiculous, power-hungry behavior since obtaining the presidency. Remember, he lied and lied and lied, literally thousands of times, probably even tens of thousands of times, in matters both big and small, since the beginning of his first term. This guy had a hard time criticizing outright Nazis and white supremacists, posted a video of a Trump supporter yelling "White Power!" during the 2020 campaign, and dismissed dozens of countries in Africa and Latin America as "shithole nations." He undermined the urgency of the coronavirus pandemic, yet used the pandemic as an excuse to try and push back the 2020 election, when it seemed clear that he was going to lose. At every turn, he tried to discredit the integrity of the election process and results, undermining people's faith in democratic institutions. He and his team repeatedly claimed to have "irrefutable proof" of "massive voter fraud" in the 202 election, arguing that it was essentially a "stolen election." Yet his legal team bent over backwards NOT to release all of that "irrefutable proof" in court when given over 60 court cases as opportunities to do that. Then, of course, January 6th, and Trump's own leading role in that regard.
To this day, Trump and his most loyal supporters refuse to concede the 2020 election, despite again never actually releasing all of that "irrefutable proof" that it was a stolen election. Then in a 2022 Truth Social post, Trump suggested that parts of the Constitution might need to be suspended. Clearly suggesting that his own power should come first, even if it compromises the Constitution of the United States.
Since taking power once again, Trump has ruled as if he is above the law. His family has gotten extraordinary wealthy and powerful, and his illegal business connections clearly pose a conflict of interests. Trump has done everything possible to grab more power, and has largely ignored court orders for certain actions, almost daring any action be taken against him or his administration. A lawless, obviously power-obsessed administration which has never failed to undermine law and order and the traditional balance of power in Washington. Yet his mindless MAGA cult applauds him and his conveniently changing stories and logic at every turn. The most egregious example of this, to me, is how in 2024, they were screaming for the Epstein Files to be released. Trump had promised to release them as a candidate in 2024. Then, once Trump refused to release them, they accepted his claims that it was all a "Democratic hoax."
And then we wonder why the rest of the world is beginning to view Americans as stupid and naive?
Yet, he keeps getting away with it, time after time. Clearly, he is above the law. Nothing can touch him.
How long will this last?
