Now before I begin with this next blog entry, let me make clear that I am not a fan of comparisons between Trump and Hitler, or the modern day United States and Nazi Germany. After all, in our recorded history, no country has ever been so completely genocidal in a bureaucratic manner as Nazi Germany. Remember, Nazi Germany stands apart from all other nations in every other chapter of history by having literally built multiple facilities specifically designed for killing off whole populations of people by the millions. That's not something that should be taken lightly. And as bad as things are in the United States right now, they are not quite that bad. Certainly not yet, in any case.
That said, there are signs that we are moving closer and close to the level of authoritarianism and propaganda that existed within Nazi Germany.
In fact, it seems that lately, we have seen the Trump administration outright borrowing phrases and sayings from Nazi Germany. It might be excused as a coincidence if it happened once, and might be open to interpretation. I remember President George H. W. Bush talking about a "New World Order," and how people said that it was the Nazis in Germany who first mentioned that phrase. However, a lot of people did not really make much of that because, again, that was open to interpretation, and not necessarily indicative of any ideological alignment with Nazis or fascists.
However, there are far more recent examples which are both closer to what Nazis said and meant, and which are not really as open to interpretation. The first example is how Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem days ago gave a public address behind a podium which bore the phrase “One of Ours, All Of Yours” during a press conference regarding recent deportation operations.
Yes, that was a phrase used by Nazis in occupied territory, warning locals (men in particular) that for any German killed, 100 locals would be killed as revenge or compensation. Nor was that some idle warning. Indeed, the Nazis made good on those threats.
So one cannot help but wonder why someone in such a high profile position would use that kind of a phrase, especially in a country governed by laws and which is supposed to have civil rights for all. It sure sounds like a direct threat to many. Especially since the phrasing here echoed that of outright Nazi occupiers in hostile territories. That is why it has generated such controversy.
But that is not the only example. In the nation's capital, there are banners depicting Dear Leader's visage. That seems to have been taken directly from the fascist playbook.
Now there are numerous social media posts echoing alarming phrases, also apparently borrowed from Nazi Germany, to accompany those oversized banners of Dear Leader. All of which is alarming. Here is a snippet of the story (see link below):
The Department of Labor, for instance, put out a post on X overnight with the words “America is for Americans,” reminiscent of the “Germany is for Germans” slogan aligned with Joseph Goebbels and the Nazi party.
Here's a bit more (again, see link blow):
A social media post from the Department of Labor is attracting criticism for appearing to echo a Nazi-era slogan from the early 20th century.
The department posted to X on Jan. 10, "One Homeland. One People. One Heritage. Remember who you are, American."
Dozens of users commented and reposted, expressing alarm and outrage over what they called an alarming echo of what the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum describes as one of the central slogans used by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. That slogan is, "One People, One Realm, One Leader."
Maybe it's time for Americans to collectively wake up pay attention to this, and to recognize these warning signs for what they actually are.
Below are the links to the two articles in which this administration borrowing outright Nazi phrases and slogans are addressed. Please take a look:
