One of the biggest news stories this weekend, other than the return of the final season of Game of Thrones, was the release of the long awaited trailer for the upcoming Star Wars movie, which will be the last installment of the Skywalker saga.
Not surprisingly, it got some reactions, both good and bad. Some felt that it was strange that the title suggests the rise of Skywalker, which immediately begs the question of which Skywalker is supposed to rise? Luke died in the last movie, so it is hard to imagine it would be him, unless it has something to do with his force ghost. It is hard to imagine it being Leia, since the real life actress who played her died, and it would be hard to imagine many scenes that should could be in, other than scenes taken but not used for the prior two movies. And it is hard to imagine that it would be Kylo Ren, given that he is a bad guy, and it would be very strange to make him out to be some kind of hero at the end, although not impossible. That leaves the possibility that it might be Rey, although that would be making a mockery of the seeming implication in the last movie that her parents really were just ordinary people who seemed to want to get rid of her.
Yet, there is also some strong reaction due to the apparent return of Emperor Palpatine. We thought that he died in "Return of the Jedi," but his laughter at the end of this trailer seems to strongly suggest that he is in this movie, in some way or the other. Did he survive both the fall, and the explosion of the Death Star? Is that even possible? Was he cloned, and this new version of him was like the old Emperor in every way, including how he got burned and disfigured by his own lightning in "Revenge of the Sith" (which would make no sense, when you really think about it)? Is there some other explanation and, if so, what would it be? Is it maybe some kind of recording? We will find out, but it will be at least eight months until most of us can.
What I found out over the weekend was that Ian McDiarmid showed up after the official release of the trailer, and in the voice of his most famous character (Emperor Palpatine, of course), he said, "Roll it again."
Pretty cool. And clearly pointing to the idea that the Emperor will indeed be back, someway or another. That makes it pretty interesting, although again, maybe I am the only one, but it still puzzles me what role Snoke was supposed to have, or if we will ever actually find out who in the hell he was to begin with.

Of course, this movie also sees the return of Lando Calrissean, the last of the major heroic characters from the original trilogy to have failed to make an appearance. His reappearance is a lot less mysterious, although we can wonder why he was left out of both of the previous two movies, quite frankly.
Some really interesting stuff, and this builds up anticipation for the release of this movie, which will be the final installment of the nine-movie saga of the Skywalker family, which has now spanned through five different decades, and was on the verge of reaching a sixth.
