Mixed Reactions Following Unveiling of the New York Jets’ New Uniforms

Well, the Jets unveiled their new uniforms, and there has been quite the reaction.

For the most part, it seems that people do not particularly like the new uniforms. Perhaps in particular, they are critical of the helmets, which admittedly could indeed use a bit of work. They tried to retain certain aspects of the newer/older logo from the Namath era, which they also used over the past two decades, while also reverting back to a more green look like they had back in the eighties and nineties.

Clearly, not everyone was a fan. Here were some reactions, as reported by the New York Post:

Gino Biagioni @ItsJustGinoB  Jets new uniforms are just as bad as @LeVeonBell new rap album  9:58 PM - Apr 4, 2019

BC the Man @BCakaTheMan  Those Jets uniforms belong on ESPN2 on Tuesday nights in November  9:56 PM - Apr 4, 2019

Yikes! That is some harsh criticism.

Yet, there were quite a few people who actually liked the new unis:

alfonso🐺 @alfonso59447295  If only the New York jets were as good as their new uniforms  1 10:01 PM - Apr 4, 2019

The Black Quentin Smithee @sdmac2221  The jets got new uniforms so they can at least look good going 4-12 next season  1 10:07 PM - Apr 4, 2019

DC in KC @DaveyGumdrops  I thought the jets had just about the worst uniforms in the league the last few years. May be in the minority, but these new ones are a massive upgrade

So, that is going the other way, with some of these people clearly loving the new uniforms. There was one comment that I felt actually summed up my own feelings about it:

Danny Desch @Bangla_Desch  I'm fairly certain I'm in the minority here but I actually think the Jets new uniforms look solid. Helmet is meh but the rest is decent.  9:58 PM - Apr 4, 2019 · Dayton, OH

Yup. That is pretty much how I feel about them, too. While embracing the return to green helmets - which makes this franchise stand out as the only real green helmets and jerseys in the league, and never mind about whatever weird greenish color the Philadelphia Eagles replaced their once nice looking green uniforms with - the fact of the matter is that the Jets could have done quite a bit better with the helmets. Either a return to the old logos that they used in the eighties, or keeping the old Namath logos, but perhaps with slight variations, or some kind of a mix that would be different than what they actually did, which looks rather boring and...well, blah.

It seems that most people seem to like the jerseys, and that outright green seems way more popular than that weird dark green that the team had gone with in recent years. It just looks brighter, fresher, and more...well, like the New York Jets. Again, though, it is a shame that they settled on that rather bizarre design for the helmets. Personally, I feel like they could have used the Namath-era logos, but with a slight alteration with the JETS spelled out like it was in the eighties, with the aerial wing atop it as well. They might have done the football logo in a similar white outline fashions, like the NY. I think that might have looked really sharp.

Still, I welcome the return to green. It feels a bit like a return to the old times, from when I followed football as a kid, and the Jets were then one of two green teams in the league. Now, they stand alone as the only really green team in the league, and it definitely makes them stand out more, at least aesthetically speaking.

Speaking of NFL uniforms, I found this link to an article with someone who generally seems to agree with many of my own views regarding uniforms around the league. There are some differences in opinions, because he likes the Titans new uniforms, while I think it makes them look very boring and generic, as if they were specifically trying to look like any other team in the league, instead of standing out. They had a nice shade of blue that looked different from everyone else, and they all but eliminated that in order to go with the predominately navy blue, almost black look, which makes them look a little bit like the Seahawks (minus the neon green), or the Bears and/or Broncos (minus the orange), or the Falcons (minus the red jerseys), or the Steelers (minus the gold), or the Rams or the Jaguars or Ravens or the old Chargers or...well, you get the point. Plus, there are teams (again, the Eagles) who have a very dark version of their original color, which almost seems to flirt with very dark at times. During certain night games, the Eagles helmets look almost black at times. Plus, blue and silver, which are now Tennessee's dominant color scheme, has been done for a long time now. We have the Detroit Lions, the Dallas Cowboys, the Indianapolis Colts (and they are in the same division!), the New England Patriots, and the Carolina Panthers, as well as, arguably, the New York Giants, which is more blue and gray, but similar enough. So, the Titans could definitely have done better, especially on originality.

Also, I disagree with him about the Cleveland Browns, although I wish that the Browns would make Browns their main colors, to really stand apart from everyone else. I mean, brown helmets, and the old brown jerseys. When they wear white jersey, the brown pants look sharp. Otherwise, I have no problem with how the Browns look.

Not sure I agree that the Denver logos of the eighties and early nineties are better than what they have now, although the orange jerseys are distinctive, and should always be their main home jerseys.

Otherwise, though, I agree with most of this guy's opinions. I also wish that Tampa Bay would go back to the creamsickle uniforms, which made them stand out. I also am not a big fan of the Ravens uniforms, and feel that black and purple just kind of looks weird. The Cardinals looked better - and I mean way better - with the uniforms that they had in the nineties, with the Arizona flag on their sleeves, and maybe the red pants for their white jerseys. The Bengals also used to look much better. The Bills and 49ers both look better with their more traditional uniforms, after experimenting with different looks here and there. Washington looked better in the eighties than they do not.

And the Giants. Yes, the white pants look better, and I think the name spelled out on the helmet, the way they looked during the Lawrence Taylor years, also probably looked better, Sharper. Especially with the white pants, rather than the boring gray ones, which make them look a bit sloppy. I might do something with an outline in white of the NY logo, and also go back to the very dark blue helmets that they had back then, which I felt gave them one of the best uniforms in the league. Frankly, when they wore their white jerseys back then, I did not feel that any team looked sharper than they did, and I wished that they would wear them far more often, like Dallas and Washington always did.

I agree that Pittsburgh has great uniforms that hardly need any improvements, and the Raiders looks great, at least when they wear the black jerseys. Why not give them black pants when they play away games in their white jerseys, maybe?

So, that is about it, I guess, for NFL uniforms for the time being. The Jets new uniforms are an upgrade, although the helmets could use some work. Bring back the old eighties logo of the Giants, and possibly add a white outline of the current NY, and give them darker helmets, like they had in the eighties! I know I am contradicting myself, because I criticized Tennessee for going to dark helmets and jerseys, but that was how the Giants looked in the old days, even in the forties and fifties. That was their look! San Fran and Buffalo look better than they did, and Atlanta, Tampa Bay, and Cincinnati could look better simply by going back to the way that they looked way back in the eighties, as well. maybe red helmets with black jerseys for Atlanta, which was before my time.
