A couple of years ago, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg suggested that Britain leaving the European Union (popularly known as Brexit) was the "stupidest thing any country has ever done."
While I agree that Brexit was indeed a stupid idea, I think that this was a bit of an overstatement. In fact, to be quite frank, I do not even believe it was the stupidest thing that a country did in 2016, which was the year of Brexit. After all, a few months later, the United States elected Donald Trump to be the next president.
Look how well each of those stupid decisions have worked out. Donald Trump has been a national embarrassment on an everyday basis, and the Brexit is clearly a disaster. Some who voted for Brexit apparently feel betrayed, claiming that they did not know that it would be this difficult.
What were they expecting? Britain had perhaps the best situation of any country in the European Union (EU). London was the de facto economic capital of the EU, and the country received considerable benefits, while harboring comparatively few of the burdens. Yet, they opted to leave.
Negotiations for the Brexit have been an absolute disaster. Prime Minister Theresa May has already struck out three times with negotiated settlements with EU members, which were struck down by the British Parliament. Brexit was formally pushed back, and it seems like more time is needed still. May has already said that she intends to step down as soon as this whole thing is over. And Trump, being the good friend that he is, has taken advantage and claimed that Britain can benefit from more trade with the United States. All he is asking is that they lower those pesky little things, like higher environmental standards and food safety standards. What are friends for, after all?
What a disaster!
No, maybe Brexit is not the stupidest decision that a country has ever made. But I would tend to think that it is the stupidest decision that a European nation in the relative stability of the postwar years has ever done, and that makes it stand out like a sore thumb, and for all of the wrong reasons!
