The Fascinating Back Story of the Song "Maneater" by Hall and Oates

Ran into this video earlier this morning, and thought it was definitely worth sharing.

Having been a child of the eighties, of course I was familiar with "Maneater" by Hall and Oates. Everybody seemed to be back then. I loved it back then and, yeah, still love it. It's a great song, after all! C'mon, man!

Anyway, when I cam across this video, it just seemed fascinating. There were things that I had simply not known before. Had no idea about, in fact. That the song was originally done in reggae style? That it originated after John Oates heard a drop dead gorgeous model and actress sitting at his table swearing up a storm? That he got the first inspirations for what would become one of the most iconic songs of the eighties that very night, and yet, that song was actually symbolic of New York City, and the mindless consumerism and "winner takes all" kind of mentality then prevailing in the United States, and indeed throughout much of the world back then, during the "Me" decade?

Some incredible stuff there. I never would have known if not for this video. So again, it definitely seemed like something worth sharing here.

Oh, by the way. The woman who was swearing and telling dirty jokes, and who first made John Oates think "she'll chew you up and spit you out," a phrase that obviously stuck in his head and began the inspiration for that immortal song? It was Kelly LeBrock of "Weird Science." Indeed, she does look like a fantasy woman, one of incredible physical beauty. So you can see how he might have been taken a bit by surprise at how different she seemed in person than her initial appearances might have led him to believe she might be.

Interesting stuff. Take a look at this video, and enjoy!
