Nichelle Nichols has died. She was most famous as the actress who played Nyota Uhura in the original Star Trek series and its film sequels. During that show, she made history when she shared what is widely believed to have been the first interracial kiss in television history, which she shared with co-star William Shatner. She also received praise from Martin Luther King, Jr., who felt that her role on the popular show was one of the first which promoted promising possibilities African-Americans, literally with the star and boundless galaxies suddenly seemingly possible.
She was quite accomplished aside from her acting career, also being a singer and having worked with NASA to promote the real world space program. Many found inspiration in her life and work. and so she will clearly be missed.
RIP, Nichelle Nichols, 1932 - 2022.
