CFL Week 8 Review: Ottawa Nabs First Win of Season While Winnipeg Remains Unbeaten

Well, Week 8 in the CFL is already part of history. And while one team does remain undefeated, there are no more winless teams remaining in the league. Let’s take a closer look at the weekend that was in the CFL:

Thursday:  Hamilton 24, Montreal 17 – A big showdown between two teams in the East who are trying to both gain ground on Toronto and one another, and not lose any ground and fall behind. Ultimately, the hometown Tiger-Cats managed to hold the threat from the Alouettes off. Both teams sport identical 2-5 records after this one.

Friday: British Columbia 32, Saskatchewan 17 – After a very solid start, the Roughriders now seem to be struggling, having dropped three straight. The Lions just proved to be a bit too much for them, and BC remains hot. British Columbia improves to 5-1 on the season, which qualifies as the second best record in the league currently. Meanwhile, Saskatchewan falls to 4-4 with this loss.

Saturday: Winnipeg 35, Calgary 28 – This was the biggest game of the week, the rematch that everyone was waiting for. But the Blue Bombers proved to be just a little too good for the Stampeders once again. In another highly entertaining contest, the Blue Bombers just managed to keep coming up with the answers, and were able to hang on. Winnipeg remains as the league’s sole remaining unbeaten team at 8-0 now, while Calgary falls to 4-2 on the year.

Sunday: Ottawa 23, Toronto 13 – In what may have been the biggest upset of the season thus far, the first place Argonauts fell to the previously winless Ottawa Redblacks, managing only 13 points in the process. Ottawa snaps that atrocious 0-6 start to improve to 1-6, while the Argos fall to 3-3. While they remain in first place in the East Division, they really lost a golden opportunity to put some cushion between themselves and the other teams in the Division, especially Hamilton.

Next week, the unbeaten Winnipeg Blue Bombers will travel to Montreal, Calgary tried to snap their current losing streak when they visit Ottawa, Hamilton will go to Toronto to renew the regional rivalry. Finally, the Edmonton Elks will be at British Columbia to face the red hot Lions.
