CFL Week 9 Review: Winnipeg Survives Early Mistakes To Remains Undefeated, Toronto Stays Stop East

Well, Week 9 in the CFL is already part of history. And while one team does remain undefeated, there are no more winless teams remaining in the league. Let’s take a closer look at the weekend that was in the CFL:

Thursday:  Winnipeg 35, Montreal 20 – Winnipeg overcame some early mistakes and a sluggish start to find their rhythm as the game went on. Ultimately, they really began to dominate as the game wore on, earning a solid victory to improve to 9-0, their best start since 1960. Meanwhile, Montreal falls to 2-6 on the season.

Friday: Calgary 17, Ottawa 3 – Ottawa was not able to follow up on their first win of the season with another victory. Despite home field advantage in this one, Calgary proved to be just too much. The Stampeders had lost two in a row, both against unbeaten Winnipeg, so they desperately needed to get back to winning, which they had been doing with ease earlier this season. This was a solid step that got them a much needed win.

Saturday: Toronto 34, Hamilton 20 – The Tiger-Cats had a wonderful opportunity to really apply a lot of pressure on Toronto and become very relevant in the East Division. With a win, they could extend the Argo's losing streak and themselves pull within half a game of first place. Instead, Toronto managed to show why they have been the first place team in the East all season long. They scored 34 points, which proved to be just too much for Hamilton. Toronto stays atop the East and improves to 4-3, the only eastern team with a winning record currently. Hamilton, meanwhile, falls to 2-6 on the season.

Saturday: British Columbia 46, Edmonton 14 – The Elks were trying to avoid a repeat of the humiliating blowout loss at British Columbia earlier this season. Instead, they suffered yet another big loss. Perhaps it was not quite as bad, but they were never really a factor in this one, and put up little fight. The Lions just dominated every facet of the game, as they improve to 6-1 on the season, the second best record in the CFL after the undefeated champion Blue Bombers. As for Edmonton, they fall to 2-6 on the year, further cementing their last place status in the West Division.
