Chris Hedges Warns That a Collapse of Civilization May Likely Be Global

Okay, so admittedly, my blog entries on this day are not especially cheery. Then again, when you look around at the world, is there much of anything in the news that is worth celebrating or feeling optimistic about?

In this particular article by Chris Hedges, he mentions that other civilizations in Central America have collapsed in the past. This is true They just abandoned their way of life, and left the ruins of their civilization behind. It still remains a mystery why they did it.

But Hedges warns that it in fact possibly a preview of what is coming for us. And if our civilization collapses, it might be the last civilization to do so, because there will be no civilization left. And yes, it might just be related to climate change, the signs of which we are seeing, and which are dominating global news headlines right now. This is what Hedges has to say:

This time the collapse will be global. It will not be possible, as in ancient societies, to migrate to new ecosystems rich in natural resources. The steady rise in heat will devastate crop yields and make much of the planet uninhabitable. Climate scientists warn that once temperatures rise by 4℃, the earth, at best, will be able to sustain a billion people.

At best, one billion people.

In November, we are supposed to reach the eight billion mark. So that would amount to a collapse, to be sure. We simply do not know the forces of chaos and violent anarchy that will be unleashed in this scenario. Unfortunately, right at this moment, seeing so much of the world sweltering and drying up under record heat and droughts, that dismal future not only look possible, but in fact looks inevitable, if we do not begin to at least acknowledge this and prepare for it.

We won't be the first civilization to collapse — but we may well be the last Chris Hedges - August 16, 2022:
