A few days ago, Donald Trump once again pushed the envelope, testing the limits not just of good taste, but of legally getting away with threats.
It came in the form of a threat. Not just any threat, and not just to anyone. This one was to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and his wife.
This, specifically, is what Trump said:
“Is McConnell approving all of these Trillions of Dollars worth of Democrat sponsored Bills, without even the slightest bit of negotiation, because he hates Donald J. Trump, and he knows I am strongly opposed to them, or is he doing it because he believes in the Fake and Highly Destructive Green New Deal, and is willing to take the Country down with him? In any event, either reason is unacceptable. He has a DEATH WISH. Must immediately seek help and advise from his China loving wife, Coco Chow!”
So once again, Trump is issuing a threat - and an outright death threat - against a political opponent. This time, it is to a member of his own party, further illustrating a dictatorial intolerance for any sort of opposition to him and his MAGA movement. It also shows that he has not moved away from addressing people with his pathetic, and in this case outright racist, nickname.
Is that going overboard in my description? Not exactly, and I am hardly the only one who recognizes the seriousness of the term "death wish" here. Given the blind loyalty of his crowd, which has shown that it is prone to violence in the past, this should clearly be regarded as an out and out threat. As George Conway, himself a Republican, yet a consistent, vocal critic of Trump since his political rise, recently tweeted in response to these latest Trump comments:

Again, Trump is suggesting something in just such a way that he and his supporters can throw their arms up and pretend innocence should something go wrong like, say, some nut job (which many passionate Trump supporters tend to be, frankly) decides to take action and follow up on Trump's words of warning against McConnell here. But given Trump's well-documented history, and the violence and fanaticism that always seems to follow him everywhere that he goes, this should indeed be regarded outright as a death threat.
If he once again gets away with this, as he has gotten away with so much in the past, as he may be getting away with his frankly criminal role on January 6th and his stealing sensitive and classified government documents once he left the White House, then it will prove that one man is indeed above the law. And that, my friends, is one fundamental aspect of fascism.
This man needs to be behind bars. He poses too serious a threat to American democracy, and to any and all who oppose him.

Again, just another news cycle that likely will be all the rage for a little while, and then will inevitably pass into obscurity the next time that Trump inevitably makes shameful headlines. Only after the worst happens, and American democracy truly dies, will these incidents be recognized by almost everyone for what they are: warning signs that American democracy might just be experiencing it's death throes:
