Now, I will be the first to admit that I am not really a huge fan of all of these obscure, highly concentrated holidays. It used to be that you could just go through a day, or a set of days, and that most days did not necessarily signify all that much. And that was okay.
Presently, we seem to have become fixated with celebrating something pretty much every single day. There are holidays that you suddenly find out about, and have never heard of before. It feels like everyone has their own holiday. International Minimum Wage Clerks Day, or Pumpkin Spice Latte Day. Of course, I am joking about those two days, but it really feels like everything is honored and celebrated on one calendar day per year.
The problem is that it often cheapens the bigger holidays or anniversaries. When something truly big or even momentous happened on a particular day, it is often met with the same shrug and resignation as one of those two fictional holidays that I just mentioned. People just do not seem to care.
Well, today is a holiday that not many people know about. Today is Leif Erikson Day, the day that Leif Erikson reached North American shores. It was not regarded as a discovery a a "New World," nor did it usher in an explosion of greater exploration and mass colonization, as Columbus "discovering" America did.
However, it is a significant historical event, and seemed worth at least making a note of today.
