NFL 2022-23 Week 5 Thursday Night Football Review: Wilson & Broncos Hand Game to Colts, Who Win in OT

🏈🏈🏈🏈

Indianapolis Colts 12, Denver Broncos 3

Before heading to my overnight job last evening, I was unable to get any sleep. For some reason, I just pay in bed, feeling surprisingly awake, knowing that I would likely pay for it and feel exhausted throughout the night shift.

Watching this game certainly did not help.

Usually, I actually like defensive games. But somehow, it was hard to tell if last night's game was one where two defenses played exceptionally well - which they both did - or if the two offenses just seemed to play particularly lousy.

The commentators made an interesting point. This was the first game in NFL, I believe, that featured two quarterbacks with multiple Pro Bowl appearances each, and with neither managing to lead their offense to any touchdowns. In fact, there were no touchdowns by either team. Not on offense, not on defense, not on special teams.

What there was a lot of were turnovers, sacks, and questionable calls. But none of the calls will be questioned nearly as much as the one that the Broncos made in throwing a high risk pass that wound up resulting in a disastrous interception, when all they had to do was hang onto the ball and milk the clock as much as possible. At the time, Denver was up by three, and in position to drain as much time from the clock, and probably score a field goal to force Indy into needing a touchdown, in order to ice the game.

That turnover proved disastrous. The Colts answered by suddenly coming alive on offense. It was not an explosion of points, or anything. But Indy moved the ball down the field enough to notch a field goal with seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Then, they managed to move the ball once again in OT, and again, got a field goal. Denver actually answered and were in scoring position, when they decided to go for the touchdown and the win, rather than a field goal for a tie. On fourth down, Russell Wilson's pass was batted down, and the Colts managed to pull off a huge win.

Again, both defenses played exceptionally well. But one man, Russell Wilson, has to be feeling a bit uncomfortable with how closely this loss felt reminiscent of the infamous "second and one" play late in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl, when it felt like the Seahawks should have simply handed it off to Marshawn Lynch, but instead, Wilson threw the ball, and it was intercepted, handing the Super Bowl win to the Patriots. In this one, Denver really had the Colts beaten, and all they had to do was run the ball. Throwing a high risk pass seems, frankly, foolish. And it cost the Broncos the game, ultimately.

Wilson received a huge contract, and there was considerable attention paid him, and many high expectations for both him and his new team. But the Broncos just have not looked very good this season, and Wilson frankly looks nothing like the star quarterback he was in Seattle. Denver may have looked a bit suspect this season to this point. Right now, after this stinging loss, on the other hand, fans and team management alike will be questioning that big money contract that Wilson received. So far, he certainly has not been worth it.

My pick: Inaccurate
