It appears that Xi Jinping will be firmly in power for some time, likely for the foreseeable future. He delivered a two-hour speech at the Chinese Communist Party Congress, and he spoke about this being a dangerous and troubling time for China. However, he also spoke about having been at the helm to help guide his country through these turbulent waters, and suggested that he was prepared to lead the country through the troubling times to come.
According to a recent New York Times article by Austin Ramzy:
His comments, in a speech of nearly two hours, represented a movement in the party’s focus squarely toward his obsession with security — that is, quashing all ideological and geopolitical challenges to the party’s rule — and away from economic development.
No way to know for sure, at this pint in time, what this might mean regarding relations with western powers, or the uncertain situation regarding Taiwan.
Below is the link to the article which I used in writing this particular blog entry:
Xi Warns of ‘Dangerous Storms’ Facing China by Austin Ramzy, Oct. 15, 2022:
In his speech, Mr. Xi cast the Communist Party, with himself at the top, as defender of the country’s security. He is expected to win a third term as leader during the party congress.
