Trump: Will He Or Won't He?

This is a picture of a magnet that was being sold at Strand's Book Store in New York City a few years ago. No, I did not buy it, but I liked it and took a picture, which I am sharing here now.

The questions seems to be a burning one for the country, albeit with different motivations and desires for everyone who asks it.

Namely, will Trump actually run for the White House in 2024, or not?

Recently, anti-Trumper Republican George Conway predicted that, indeed, Trump would win. His motivation, he said, would be self-preservation. The office of the President of the United States, with all of it's awesome responsibilities, also provides a measure of protection and even immunity for the individual holding the office.

Indeed, that is one motivation, and my guess is that it is indeed a major one for Trump. It seems to me that this would be a bigger appeal for Trump than an actual desire to do what is necessary to actually improve conditions within the country. After all, if there is anything that a truly fair and balanced and objective review of Trump's history reveals, it is that he always, always, always tried to take actions that are clearly self-serving. By his own admission, he is greedy. In fact, his selfishness knows no bounds, and is frankly the stuff of legend.

And that leads me to another reason that might motivate Trump to run again: his staggering, obscene ego. Much like his selfishness, and obviously attached to it, the man has an ego that also is the stuff of legend. I mean, can you think of anyone else who makes such a point of putting his own name up atop skyscrapers that dominate our modern city skylines? Or who never fails to proclaims his own alleged greatness, or how he believes himself to be the greatest and most accomplished president in American history?

So yeah, on this particular point, I would tend to agree with George Conway. We will see Trump run for the White House once again. This guy's ego just will not allow him to simply fade away, even if that would truly be best for the country, and for the world, frankly. To be sure, it will be a shit show. But again, given the now extensive history of anything that Trump does, how can we possibly expect anything that Trump does or is associated with to be anything else?

Conway also predicted the shit show part. In fact, he predicted that there will be a "meltdown to end all meltdowns." That also seems like a distinct possibility, given all that we know about Trump. The question that I have, then, is will even that be enough to finally get the American electorate to do what should have been done a long, long time ago, which is to finally throw Trump out with the rest of the trash and let his memory rot in the dustbin of history?

That much remains to be seen. Wish I could give a definitive answer of yes. But if Trump's rise to political prominence has shown anything, it is that we simply cannot find a bottom to the utter crap that millions of Americans are willing to accept. Just when you think that our political circus cannot get any lower, there is yet another surprise. The fact that Trump still seems such a towering presence in our political landscape presently is proof enough of that much.
