Giants Beat Packers, Remain Historically Perfect in Britain

New York Giants (3-1)

vs.

Green Bay Packers (3-1)

NY Giants 27, Green Bay Packers 22

Okay, well I was wrong. Having predicted the G-Men to fall to the Packers in London, this was one time when, in fact, I was rather pleased to be wrong.

The Giants looked like they were flirting with a loss against Green Bay in London. At one point in the second quarter, they looked pretty well beaten, down 17-3. It seemed at that point like Rodgers and that Packers offense was a bit too much for the Big Blue defense. And the offense looked like they were falling back into their old bad habits, and unable to hold their own.

Yet to their credit, they kept hanging in there and played well. The offense got going, relying once again on their running attack. In fact, they produced a very good mixture of run and pass. They proved to be very effective and, yes, efficient. From that midpoint in the second quarter to the end of the game, the Giants outscored the Packers 24-5.

Ultimately, they played their very best when it mattered the most, in the fourth quarter. They scored two touchdowns in that final quarter, while allowing none. Late in the final quarter, the Packers were threatening deep in Giants territory. They went all the way to the Giants 6-yard line. However, they needed a touchdown, not a field goal. And the defense held.

After allowing 17 points by midway in the second quarter, they allowed only one field goal the rest of the way. Green Bay got a safety in the last minute of the game, but that was not against this Big Blue defense.

This win surprised me. And it also means that, historically speaking, the Giants remain perfect when they travel to Great Britain for regular season games. They won their first ever London game (the first ever regular season game played in Britain, in fact) in 2007, beating the Miami Dolphins, 13-10. That was the year that the Giants wound up beating the undefeated New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, denying them the perfect season and taking the title for themselves instead. Some years later, the G-Men beat the Rams, 17-10, at Twickenham. And now, today's 27-22 victory over the Packers.

Wow! What a game. Glad to be wrong in this case!
