CFL Update for October 17, 2022

Let's take a look at the CFL action from last week:

Montreal 34, Ottawa 30 - The 4-12 Redblacks did not make it easy for the visiting Alouettes, but Montreal nevertheless pull this one off. Just barely, however. Ottawa has greatly improved their level of play later in the season, thanks at least in part to interim head coach Bob Dyce. They appear to be working harder and notching better results. Still, the now 8-8 Alouettes pulled it off and with this win, they now have officially clinched a playoff spot.

Hamilton 35, Calgary 32 - In a back and forth affair, the Tiger-Cats managed to just pull off a huge road win in Calgary, which has important ramifications for the playoffs. First of all, it knocked the now 10-6 Stampeders outright behind the BC Lions in the West. And it also placed 6-10 Hamilton ahead of Saskatchewan and in decent position to qualify for the postseason.

British Columbia 40, Winnipeg 32 - The Lions earned this important win which, coupled with the surprise loss by Calgary, places them in sole possession of second place in the CFL. Now perhaps we should note that Winnipeg, which only lost their third game of the season here, already had clinched the best record and number one seed, and thus were not really trying too hard to win. This knocked the Blue Bombers down to 14-3 on the season, while British Columbia improved to 11-5 on the year.

Toronto 28, Edmonton 23 - The Argonauts did what they had to do. Edmonton put up a fight, but the Argos managed to overcome a surprisingly tough Elks team and secure the win, maintaining their two game cushion in the East. Toronto improves to 10-6, and they need one more win to secure a first round bye and home field advantage for the East Final. As for Edmonton, they fall to 4-13 on the year, which currently stands as the worst record in the league.
