I am trying to keep positive regarding this country's relationship with Trumpism and the mindless MAGA cult, which has dominated this country politically for far too long now. It has now been a decade that they have dominated American politics with ridiculous headlines. Not all of that time has seen Trump in the Oval Office. But it seems to me that he has dominated news headlines dating back to late 2015, during the 2016 presidential elections which, we all know, he eventually won.
How people are not sick and tired of hearing his voice and seeing his ugly orange face and that ridiculously extravagant and weird combover is beyond me. Why a man as classless and clueless as that is seen as some kind of a hero and genius, or how such a whining bitch of a crybaby is regarded as this incredibly macho man is beyond me, frankly. I was tired of him well before he ever won the 2016 election. But some people still can't get enough of him.
Some people who are also tired of him and MAGA still have high hopes that this nightmare will end soon.
Any minute now.
Many of these people I have respect for. That included Robert Reich. Normally, I agree with the things that he says and the points he makes. But it seems to me sometimes that he has a blind spot when it comes to Trump and why this country just cannot seem to get past this political nightmare.
Reich points out how clueless Trump is and how he really cannot relate to average Americans. How could he, after all, having been born into obscene wealth and privilege, and never having known any real struggle throughout his otherwise miserable life? He still seems as out of touch as ever, thinking that the only thing most Americans have to do to get past these troubled economic times is buy less pencils and dolls.
Really?
What is it about this man that so many people seem to love and identify with? Cut back on expenses of too many pencils and dolls? That's apparently what most Americans need to do? And you still think this guy understands you, can relate to you? That he's the champion of working class America?
Reich points out how stubbornly clueless Trump clearly is during his recent "Christmas" speech:
It’s rich — Trump preaching austerity while raking in billions from his crypto investments and bribes: a luxury jetliner from Qatar, gold bar from Apple, wealth from the Saudis, gold Rolex clock from Switzerland, and so much more.
“The only thing that is truly going up big, it’s called the stock market and your 401(k)s,” Trump continued, apparently unaware that 92 percent of the stock market is owned by the richest 10 percent of Americans while most Americans own no stock at all. (Just over a third have even a 401(k), 403(b), 503(b) or Thrift Savings Plan.)
He was supposed to talk about affordability, but Trump’s malignant narcissistic brain seemed incapable of the minimal empathy needed to understand the public’s angst over the cost of living. So he veered off affordability to attack Minnesota’s Rep. Ilhan Omar, ridicule windmills, mock transgender people, and call Joe Biden a son of a bitch.
Again, Reich makes some very valid points. Hard to argue with what he is saying....except for one thing.
He seems certain that Trump and MAGA's political dominance is on the verge of ending.
I am trying to remain optimistic, but it feels like, on this point, Reich is fooling himself. It feels like the same kind of wishful thinking that had so many Trump detractors sure that he was going to inevitably end up behind bars, or that he would be held accountable for everything from the "perfect" Ukrainian calls to his role in January 6th or the years and years of lying about the 2020 election to his constant (and demonstrably) lies to his refusing to fully release the Epstein Files.
Nothing sticks to this guy. Everything bounces off of him. He has the mindless support of the 70 million or so mindless members of the MAGA Cult to serve as his de facto political bullet proof vest. It's how he gets away with everything.
It's how this country is become a fascist nation now.
Wish I could believe Reich's arguments.
Unfortunately, this is where I am having a hard time agree with him. It feels to me that his blind spot when it comes to the stubborn, militant stupidity - sorry, but I'm calling it as I see it - of the Trump supporting crowd keeps getting underestimated. I remember people being absolutely certain that he would not win the 2016 election. Had no chance. Then that he had discredit himself so much with the election denial in 2020, and his role with January 6th, that he would forever be relegated to the dustbins in history. Then he posted on Truth Social his belief that parts of the Constitution might need to be suspended. And so many other things. Surely, he would not win another term in office, right?
Yet here we are. I kind of knew that he would win the 2024 election days after Biden took office. After all of the nonsense, there was Trump at yet another one of his damn political rallies. The circus would continue.
And it seems like this country has not had enough of the circus yet.
Until that happens, we will continue to see headlines that should seem laughable, but are actually tragic because they are true.
This is the truth in this country right now, unfortunately. And I for one believe it's probably better to see it for what it is, rather than turn a blind eye and pretend it's not as bad as it is, or that it is merely a phase that will all soon go away and be forgotten.
