Trump Angrily Demands Access to Canadian Ports, But Prime Minister Carney Refuses to Be Bullied or Concede

Trump is not a smooth guy. The pattern with Trump always seems to be that he says and does something stupid, then either ignores the backlash, or pretends that there is no backlash, ignoring any and all criticisms in his typical fashion.

He is never responsible for anything that goes wrong, at least according to him.

Of course, this has been his tiresome gimmick for a long, long time. And the most sickening thing, as far as I am concerned, is not that Trump has the gall to behave like this. No, the sickening thing is that tens of millions of people continue to lend him their unwavering support, even when he clearly is very much in the wrong.

So far, the most egregious aspect of his second term has been the completely unnecessary tensions which he has sparked regarding neighbors and potential military takeovers which he keeps threatening. As he infamously did with Greenland. And Panama. And Gaza. And Mexico. And Canada.

This behavior by not just an elected American official, but the man holding the very highest elected office - the face and voice of the United States for yet another long four years, in other words - understandably causes trepidation and instability around the world. Dozens of countries impose travel restrictions to the United States, including Denmark and other European Union nations, as well as Canada.

Is that even a surprise?

When asked for reaction, Trump once again shows nothing than impatience and anger. Of course, all of this couldn't possibly be his fault, right? I mean, all he did was threaten an illegal military takeover of numerous places like Greenland and Panama and Gaza and continually, relentlessly (and pointlessly) refer to Canada - an independent nation historically and realistically completely separate from the United States - as the "51st state."

That is not the kind of behavior that is going to lay the groundwork for good relations between other countries and the United States. In particular, in this case, Canada.

So now Canada began to resist, and this made the famously unstable Trump even madder. So he did what he does better than anyone else: whine and complain and throw an angry tantrum. Because, you know, that's what presidents do, right?

But Canada still is not cooperating.

Is that even really surprising?

Prime Minister Carney really has no reason either to trust Donald Trump or, for that matter, back down. After all, we all understand that history lesson about how appeasing dictators does not work. And in case we did forget, Trump has been reminding us, time and time again. People keep giving him what he wants, giving in, and that does not slake his thirst for power. As it turns out, it just makes him feel more entitled and empowered to pursue even more and more. All kidding aside, I am not entirely sure that Trump's face will not somehow be added to Mount Rushmore. Yes, I think that Trump and his mindless MAGA Moron cult is that far gone.

I applaud Canada and Prime Minister Carney for continuing to resist Trump and the United States. We Americans apparently need constant reminders that we cannot simply get everything that we want any old time and place that we want it.

Good for often overlooked and disrespected Canada that they are now the biggest power regularly reminding us of that fact, and commanding our collective respect by so doing.
