On this day in 1940 during World War II, a North Africa: British counter offensive in northern Africa, a mobile armoured force of 36,000 under Lieutenant-General Richard O'Connor outflanked the Italians at Beda Fomm and pursued them 840km (500 miles) back to Libya.
