Ran into this video some time ago, although I never quite got around to publishing this blog entry about it.
It is a rather astonishing story about how the medieval double walled city of Carcassonne - a real treasure - was going to be destroyed at some point in the 19th century, because no one apparently knew what to do with it.
Thank goodness the locals railed against it and the beautiful city was preserved.
Can you imagine if they succeeded in destroying it? What a shame, and what an absolute waste that would have been.
Anyway, it was not destroyed and, today, still stands as one of the greatest historical treasures in the world, in my opinion.
